Structural edit: When I do a structural edit, I try to be very thorough and point out everything. Besides the basics like grammar, typos, and syntax, here’s a rundown of some of the other areas I assess in a structural edit.

–Verb tense errors
–Point of view errors
–Plot arc consistency
–Character consistency
–Continuity of story

And when I suggest a revision, I will go into detail in the comments as to why I’ve applied the revision. I believe an author has a right to know why changes are suggested or applied, as this makes the author a better editor. All structural edits include a second read through of the manuscript. They also include on call help for the author via Skype.

Copy edit: Copy edits are basic. I check syntax, grammar, punctuation, some formatting, but don’t address structural needs here. If I do think the story requires a deeper edit than a copy edit can provide, I’ll let the author know this.

Line edit: Check for the basics, like grammar, missing quotations, syntax, typos, punctuation errors, but it doesn’t go into structural territory, and it doesn’t cover formatting.

Proofreading: Check for the basics here, but I don’t check format or read line by line.
